I was tasked with developing a courthouse within the Kranzberg Arts Building in St. Louis, Missouri. The main goal of this project was to navigate the complicated program of a courthouse as well as consider renovations of an existing building. My courthouse program spreads across the top three floors of the building. The main gesture of the building is the long, sweeping stairs that wrap around the adjusted floor plates. By pulling the floor plates away from the exterior walls and retrofitting the building’s structure, the towering, historic walls are highlighted. Each floor’s organization is the same, however the orientation changes based on the floor’s relationship to the stairs. The stairs guide the building’s circulation to create smooth flow between floors. The open space on each floor is set up as public space and features benches between some columns for seating.
